April 19, 2023 | at the FISU Summer University World Games
100 days! As of today, there is so much time left until the start of the FISU World University Games in Chengdu 2021. From July 28 to August 8, thousands of student-athletes, coaches and activists from five continents are expected in the capital of Sichuan.
The Chinese megalopolis of 20 million people will host 269 medal events in 18 sports (artistic gymnastics, swimming, badminton, athletics, fencing, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, judo, archery, water polo, taekwondo, diving, tennis, rhythmic gymnastics, wushu sport shooting and rowing).
The competition will take place at 45 different sports facilities, including 13 newly built for the FISU Games.
At the recent Heads of Delegation meeting, FISU delegates and staff who visited some of the major venues were unanimously impressed by the extraordinary level of preparation and had no doubt that Chengdu was 100% ready for this major multi-sport event.
“I am more than confident that Chengdu will host great matches,” said FISU acting president Leonz Eder. “I hope that as many student athletes as possible will come to Chengdu to compete and meet.”
Postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FISU Games in Chengdu will end a 4-year period without summer games, with the final edition taking place in Naples, Italy in 2019.
“FISU has always been united, no matter what problems we faced. The Chengdu 2021 FISU Games will play an important role in building unity and peace among student athletes and in the world of college sports,” said FISU Secretary General and CEO Éric Saintrond.
