2022 IWGA Athlete and Team of the Year
The racing is about to begin: Who will be named World Games Athlete of the Year and World Games Team of the Year 2022? Online voting, which will start on January 10, will determine who will be crowned the best of the best. The best at TWG 2022 in Birmingham, USA will get a shot at another title.
A total of 23 athletes and 12 teams are participating in the election, nominated by member federations of the International World Games Association (IWGA). Athletes or teams must compete in the Games held July 7-17 in Alabama. Anna Jacobson, IWGA Communications Director, expects the race to be fierce for the 2022 Athlete and Team of the Year awards: “With The World Games 2022 in mind, I’m sure fans will be eagerly waiting for their favorite competitor to win.”
The online voting platform will be launched on the IWGA website, theworldgames.org, in early January 2023. The first round of voting will close around January 22 and will determine ten athletes and seven team finalists. The final round of voting will again start with zero votes and will last until January 31, 2023, when the winners will be announced. The winners – the competitor and the team (first place, runner-up, second runner-up) will receive cups.
Voting will also be promoted on IWGA’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts. This means that supporters of the candidate will be able to share their enthusiasm and encourage others to support the athlete or team.
World Games fans can choose their favorite with one click. Or rather, with two clicks, because the regulations say that each participant can vote for candidates once every 24 hours on The World Games website and each time you have to vote for two candidates. The first-choice candidate shall be given two votes and the second-choice candidate one vote. You can vote separately for both Athlete of the Year and Team of the Year. The current ranking and number of votes cast for each candidate will be displayed on the IWGA voting page as the voting period ends.
For the ninth time, the IWGA voted for Sportsman of the Year. “It’s kind of a tradition to kick off the new year with a celebration of the achievements of our outstanding athletes. This time, we are once again reviving the memories of the exceptional Games in Birmingham, USA this summer thanks to our vote. The best of TWG 2022 on the candidate list have a great chance to win another title. What makes it so valuable is that the fans themselves decide who will be the athlete and team of the year,” explains IWGA President José Perurena.
World games is a multi-sport event organized every four years by the International World Games Association, organized with the support of the International Olympic Committee. The 2022 World Games took place in Birmingham, Alabama, USA from July 7-17, 2022. 3,600 athletes from 34 sports and 100 countries participated in the games. The 12th edition of The World Games will be held in Chengdu, CHN in 2025.
