Mikaela Shiffrin has a great chance to overtake fellow American Lindsey Vonn’s record as the most successful women’s alpine skier in World Cup racing starting this Friday (January 20).
The American will compete in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy for three World Cup races from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 January. Shiffrin will compete in the women’s downhill on Friday and Saturday and the super-G on Sunday, needing only one win to move away from the position she currently holds with fellow American Vonn.
Shiffrin’s 83rd win would earn her a lone spot at the top of the women’s skiers list and second place on the all-time list with just Ingemar Stenmark (86) in front of her.
Although she was more successful in the technical slalom and giant slalom events, Shiffrin has three wins in downhill races and five wins in Super Giant Slalom (Super-G) races, most recently in St. Moritz in Switzerland, a month ago. She also has a respectable record in Cortina, where she won four medals, including gold overall at the 2021 World Championships, as well as an FIS World Cup win in the Super-G discipline in January 2019. Podium in the downhill (third) in 2018.
The 27-year-old is in first place in the overall World Cup standings with 1,195 points Petr Vlhova second at 796.
This season, Shiffrin is fighting for her fifth overall title, which would put her second on the all-time winning list behind the Austrian Annemarie Moser-Pröll which has six titles to its credit.
