BWF World Tour Finals 2022 moved to Bangkok, rescheduled


Badminton end of the season World Tour Finals the tournament will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from December 7-11, 2022a week earlier and in a different country than originally planned.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF), the international federation of the sport, announced new dates after confirming that Guangzhou, China, is no longer able to host the event due to ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.

“BWF, in consultation with the China Badminton Association (CBA), has agreed to postpone the HSBC BWF World Tour 2022 Finals due to various challenges related to the current pandemic situation,” the federation said in a statement.

The capital of Thailand, which hosted the 2020 finals in January 2021, stepped in to host the tournament in Arena Nimibutr.

The BWF said the change of dates was “due to the availability of the stadium and the consequent change of location”.

The top eight in each of the five badminton disciplines – men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles – will qualify for the finals in the World Tour Race to Guangzhou Ranking, based on the results of the season in the travel events.

All 40 qualifiers will be confirmed following the last Tour of the season regular event this week, the Australian Open.
