Monday’s devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed more than 16,000 people in southern Turkey and Syria, and the number is sadly still rising.
FISU Acting President Leonz Eder and Secretary General/CEO Éric Saintrond wrote to the Turkish National University Sports Federation expressing FISU’s deepest sorrow and heartfelt sympathy to the Federation and all the people whose lives and livelihoods were affected by the disaster.
“We sincerely hope that none of your relatives or friends have been affected and that concerned people will find the strength to move on during this difficult time,” the letter concludes.
Through its National University Sports Federation, Türkiye has organized many FISU events, including the 23rdr&d Izmir Summer Universiade (2005) and 25thp Winter Universiade in Erzurum (2011) and most recently the FISU World University Championships in Martial Arts and Basketball 3×3 in Samsun and Istanbul respectively (2022).
