Mikaela Shiffrinstriving to move away from his fellow Americans Lindsey VonnHer record as the most successful women’s alpine skier in World Cup racing continues this week as the track moves to Kronplatz/Plan de Corones in Italy with two days of giant slalom.
Two events are scheduled for Tuesday (January 24) and Wednesday (January 25).
Shiffrin is currently tied with Vonn with 82 World Cup victories, the most of any female skier. Shiffrin and Vonn are just behind Ingemar Stenmark all the time. The Swede has won 86 World Cup titles in his career.
Ascending the Kronplatz, 27-year-old Shiffrin comes down from two downhill races and one Super G race in Cortina, Italy, where she failed to make the podium, finishing fourth and seventh twice. After these races, she said she was looking forward to the events at Kronplatz.
“I can’t wait to get back to GS and slalom and start from Kronplatz. It’s a difficult hill. It is a very demanding hill,” said Shiffrin. “So I know how to ski fast, but I also know it’s going to be hard to get the timing right after skiing long skis.”
She has raced at Kronplatz in each of the last five seasons, winning once in 2019 but also suffering from a rare DNF in the 2018 edition. In the 2022-23 season, Shiffrin won three giant slalom titles, with two wins at Semmering and one at Kranjska Mountain.
Shiffrin still leads the World Cup overall with 1,317 points. Petr Vlhova ranks second with 796 points.
This season, Shiffrin is fighting for her fifth overall title, which would put her second on the all-time winners list, behind Austria Annemarie Moser-Pröllwhich has six titles to its name.
