Global sports community must continue to make mental health a priority

On this year’s World Mental Health Day, GAISF President Ivo Ferriani underlined the key role that sport can play in improving mental health and wellbeing, and how it should be priority both on and off the field of play.

Celebrated annually on 10 October, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilise efforts in support of mental health. This year’s theme is ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.

According to the latest United Nations (UN) data, nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder. Studies show that sport and physical activity have a significant, positive impact on mental health by improving mood, alleviating stress, boosting self-esteem, and preventing and managing depression.

GAISF President Ivo Ferriani said:
While sport is most often linked with physical health benefits, the profound impact it can have on one’s mental wellbeing should not be overlooked. Making mental health a priority begins before we even step onto the field of play by creating a safe environment to ensure that no one has to suffer in silence.
Significant strides have been made by the global sports community to remove the stigma surrounding mental health and ensure that sport is a positive driving force for promoting mental wellbeing. So from grassroots through to the elite, and both on and off the field of play, sport must continue to play a key role in transforming mental health for all.
