Mikaela Shiffrin there is only one in the back Lindsey VonnThe FIS Alpine Ski World Cup breaks a women’s record.
The two-time Olympic champion won the first of two scheduled night slaloms at the Sljeme circuit in Zagreb on Wednesday (January 4), taking her fifth consecutive World Cup victory and 81st overall.
She had high hopes of equalizing Vonn’s score on Thursday, but exceptionally warm weather and strong winds in the Croatian capital forced the race to be cancelled.
Shiffrin now goes to Kranjska Gora in Slovenia for two giant slaloms on Saturday and Sunday.
If he wins one, he will join Vonn in 82 World Cup victories with just Ingemar Stenmark (86) in front of them. The doppelgänger would have seen him walk past another American.
The 27-year-old is in first place in the overall World Cup standings with 975 points, which is 409 points ahead of Petr Vlhova.
Shiffrin is fighting for her fifth overall title this season, which would put her second on the all-time winners list behind the Austrian Annemarie Moser-Pröll which has six titles to its credit.
