Veteran Rohan Bopanna was named in Indian tennis team for the upcoming Davis Cup 2023 The World Group I play-offs will face Denmark on February 3 and 4 at the Royal Stage Stadium in Hillerod, Denmark.
The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has announced a five-man squad for Saturday’s match against Denmark. Except for Rohan Bopanna, Mukund Sasikumar, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Yuki Bhambri there are the other four Indian tennis players in team.
Former India No. 1 Sumit Nagal he was named a reserve player while former player Rohit Rajpal will continue to be the non-playing captain of the Indian Davis Cup team.
Rohit Rajpal, who has represented India in the competition in the past, has been the non-playing team captain since the 2019 Davis Cup match against Pakistan. Zeeshan Ali will act as the team’s head coach.
A tie in the Davis Cup consists of five matches – four singles and one doubles. Rohan Bopanna, a doubles specialist, is sure to play doubles and it will turn out who is the partner of the Grand Slam winner.
Mukund Sasikumar, ranked 340th in the world in the latest ATP tennis rankings for singles, is currently the highest ranked player in India, followed by Prajnesh Gunneswaran (348). Ramkumar Ramanathan ranks 434th and Yuki Bhambri ranks 551st.

India has a 2-1 head-to-head record against Denmark in the Davis Cup. While they lost their first meeting in 1927, India won 3-2 in 1984. The last meeting between the two teams was at the same stage of the competition last year where India won 4-0 and advanced to Group I where they lost to Norway.
19-year-old Holger Rune, the 11th singles player in the world, will potentially be the biggest threat to India from the Danes in the upcoming meeting.
The best performances of the Indian tennis team in the Davis Cup came in 1966, 1974 and 1987 when they finished second.
