Indian athletes will have a busy 2023 season with 23 major national competitions scheduled throughout the year, in addition to international fixtures such as the Asian Games and the World Championships in Athletics.
The Indian athletics calendar 2023 starts on January 7 in Assam from the National Cross Country Championships. Athletics will experience action for the first time in March with the second edition of the Open Competition in Throwing and Jumping.
Four stages of the Indian Grand Prix are planned for the period from March to April 2023. The first two will be held in Thiruvananthapuram and the next two will be held in Bengaluru. The fifth stage of the competition will be held in September after the World Athletics Championships.
The Indian Open 400m will also be held on March 5 in Thiruvananthapuram.
The Federation Cup, where Amlan Borgohain broke the national record in the men’s 200m last year, and the Interstate Senior Championships, the two premier events for India’s elite athletes, will be held in June and July respectively.
Continuing from last year, the Indian Athletic Federation (AFI) will celebrate August 7 as National Javelin Day to commemorate Neeraj Choprahistoric gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
AND javelin throw competitions will be held that day in all states.
Jamshedpur will host the national Open Athletics Championships at the end of the season in October, followed by zonal events (North, South, East, West) in the same month.
The World Team Race Walking Championships in Muscat (March 4 and 5) would be the first major international meeting of the Indians. The Asian Championships in Pattaya, Thailand (July 12-16) are all the more important as the winners gain direct qualification for the World Championships in Budapest (August 19-27).
As for juniors, the rescheduled Asian Junior Athletics Championships will be held in Yecheon, South Korea from June 4-7, ahead of the U-20 World Championships in Lima, Peru from August 20-25.
The Indian athletics calendar ends with the junior championships on November 4 in Chennai.
