Decision on three doping cases

The International World Games Association (IWGA) has gone public with anti-doping rule violations (ADRV) at The World Games 2022 Birmingham, AL, USA.

The following decisions have been made by the responsible authorities of the IWGA and ITA in relation to these positive cases in competitions.

Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) Case 1:

– Player’s name: Mrs. Madalyn Baxter, lacrosse player from Canada

– Prohibited substances: Canrenone, classified in class S5 Diuretics and masking agents

– Pursuant to Article 9 of the IWGA Anti-Doping Rules (ADR), all individual results of the athlete obtained at The World Games 2022 Birmingham, AL, USA are hereby disqualified with all Consequences, including forfeiture of all medals, diplomas, points and prize. This includes the athlete’s gold medal earned at the Outdoors Sixes Women’s Finals, which is refundable. Canadian Lacrosse team results are not disqualified. World Lacrosse is responsible for determining the appropriate consequences that may be imposed under the World Lacrosse Anti-Doping Rules, including deciding whether a player is subject to suspension.

Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) Case 2:

– Competitor’s name: Ms. Sveva Melillo, Muaythai competitor from Italy

– Prohibited Substance: Canrenone, Class S5 Diuretics and Masking Agents

– Pursuant to Article 9 of the IWGA ADR, all individual results of a competitor obtained at The World Games 2022 Birmingham, AL, USA are hereby disqualified with all Consequences, including forfeiture of all medals, diplomas, points and prizes. This includes the disqualification of the Athlete’s Gold Medal at the Muaythai Finals in the women’s up to 54 kg category. There are no further consequences for the Athlete under the IWGA ADR. IFMA will determine the appropriate consequences that may be imposed under the IFMA Anti-Doping Rules, including the decision as to whether an Athlete is subject to Suspension.

Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) Case 3:

– Competitor’s name: Ms. Francesca Parrello, powerlifting athlete from Italy

– Prohibited substance: Methandriol metabolite 17?-methly-5?-androstane-3a,17?-diol, classified under S1.1 Anabolic androgenic steroids

– Pursuant to Article 9 of the IWGA ADR, all individual results of a competitor obtained at The World Games 2022 Birmingham, AL, USA are hereby disqualified with all Consequences, including forfeiture of all medals, diplomas, points and prizes. This includes the disqualification of an athlete’s bronze medal in a women’s equipment heavyweight event. There are no further consequences for the Athlete under the IWGA ADR. POLADA will determine the appropriate consequences that may be imposed under the POLADA Anti-Doping Rules, including the decision as to whether the Athlete is subject to Suspension.

While this applies to individual TWG 2022 medals, these decisions affect the competition as follows:

Sveva Melillo (Italy), competing in the Women’s 54 kg Muaythai competition, will be disqualified and will be stripped of her gold medal won at TWG 2022.

Francesca Parrello (Italy), women’s heavyweight powerlifter, is disqualified and withdrawn for the bronze medal.

The athletes concerned did not appeal. The judgment is therefore final.

For Muaythai Women’s 54 kg, this results in the following new classification:

Gold Medalist: Ashley Thiner (USA)

silver medalist; Laura Burgos (Mexico)

Bronze medalist: Yolanda Schmidt (AUS)

For women’s heavyweight powerlifting, this results in the following new ranking:

Bronze medalist: Cicera Tavares (BRA)

IWGA Executive Committee member Volker Bernardi, who is responsible for medical and anti-doping matters within the Council, commented: “The IWGA anti-doping operations at The World Games 2022 in partnership with the International Testing Agency are successful proof that TWG is a clean multisport event at the highest level. efficiency. World Games are pure games. The results of our test operations, showing three positive results out of 332 total tests between July 6 and July 17, 2022, is a real record of success. The IWGA particularly appreciates the cooperation of the highly competent medical and anti-doping team in Birmingham, including the ITA team, the IWGA Medical and Anti-Doping Commission and their respective on-site units, which was also confirmed by a previous WADA Independent Observer report.”

World games is a multi-sport event organized every four years by the International World Games Association, organized with the support of the International Olympic Committee. The 2022 World Games took place in Birmingham, Alabama, USA from July 7-17, 2022. 3,600 athletes from 34 sports and 100 countries participated in the games. The 12th edition of The World Games will be held in Chengdu, CHN in 2025.
