Youth Olympic Champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga will not be part of the Indian team at 2022 World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Bogotá, Colombia next month.
Indian weightlifter he strained his lower back and thigh during a gold medal winning performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July and has not fully recovered from his injury.
Jeremy Lalrinnunga also missed the Asian Weightlifting Championships last month and hasn’t competed since the CWG.
“Many Commonwealth Games weightlifters are recovering from injuries. That’s why we selected four athletes who are in good shape,” Indian weightlifting coach Vijay Sharma told PTI earlier this week.
Led by 2017 world champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, India’s weightlifters will face a major challenge at the World Championships, which is also the first qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
It will also be Mirabai Chanu’s first international competition since winning gold at the Commonwealth Games. She will compete in the women’s weight category up to 49 kg.
Achinta Sheuli, winner of the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s 73 kg category, will fight in the same category at the world championships.
Bindyarani Devi, the CWG silver medalist in the women’s 55 kg category, gained weight to compete in the 59 kg category. At the last edition of Bindyarani Devi won the gold medal in the category up to 55 kg women’s style and clean.
CWG bronze medalist Gurdeep Singh will also be looking to make his mark at the men’s +109 kg world championships.
The 2022 IWF World Championships will be held at the Gran Carpa Americas Corferias in Bogotá, Colombia from December 5 to 16.
