Barriers exist in every country and society, preventing some groups from participating fully in political, economic, and social activities. These barriers may be based on gender, age, location, occupation, race, ethnicity, religion, citizenship status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Furthermore, the world is experiencing a significant increase in forced displacement, with many refugees and asylum seekers facing exclusion, mental and physical health problems, and a lack of opportunities to participate in sports and physical activity.
To improve the ability, opportunity, and dignity of those who are disadvantaged, it is necessary to make a deliberate effort towards social inclusion and integration of these groups. Policies and actions that promote equal access to public services and enable citizens to fully participate in the lives of their communities and the decision-making processes that affect their lives can help achieve this.
It’s important to note that the United Nations recognises sport as not only an essential contributor but also a powerful tool for inclusion, relief, health promotion, and human connection. The Global Sport for All Movement is committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone to participate in physical activity, regardless of their background or ability. By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, the movement plays a crucial role in fostering social inclusion and integration worldwide.
The workshop, therefore, aims to promote a joint pledge among the Global Sport for All organisations and individuals that mobilises resources, expertise, and networks to facilitate access to and opportunities through sport for displaced people and host communities, contributing to more inclusive, tolerant, and cohesive societies. A panel of expert speakers from TAFISA and Sport for Refugees Coalition will share the pledge’s importance, case studies, and experiences of refugees and make a call to action towards implementing the pledge.
At the end of the workshop, it is expected that Sport for All leaders across the globe, workshop participants, and individuals will heed the call and inspire action to implement the pledge and to use sport for social inclusion and integration of refugees.
