Saturday was just another day at the Republic of Korea office at Jack Shea Arena 1932 as the delegation finished the short track speed skating FISU World University Games in Lake Placid with four gold medals in as many events.

Minjeong Choi added two more gold medals to her medal collection, making her the Games’ most successful athlete with four medals.

Choi won her first women’s 1000m race in 1:38.107, ahead of Germany’s Anna Siedel (1:38.134) and teammate Whimin Seo (1:38.252).

“I am very happy to win the gold medal in all individual events,” said the three-time Olympic champion, who was cheered by the stands. “We are well known for being favorites in short track. I’m trying my best to continue that legacy in the future.”

Moments later, she won her fourth Olympic gold in the women’s 3000m relay when Korea clocked a time of 4:12.557, ahead of China (4:16.642) and the United States (4:24.015).

“It is a real honor for me to compete with these girls,” said teammate Jiyun Park after the race. “I will celebrate with the whole team after the medal ceremony.”

Korean women won a total of nine medals on the short track at Lake Placid 2023.

“Whatever the color of the medals, we won them together, and that means a lot. This is very important to us,” added Whimin Seo.

In the men’s 1000 m run, the Koreans stood on the podium. Sungwoo Jang set a best time of 1:25.937, followed by Jeongmin Lee (1:26.029) and Taesung Kim (1:26.071).

“I am very happy because I have achieved the goal I set for myself before the Games,” said the winner after winning his second medal in Lake Placid. “I worked really hard to get here, so I’m very excited about the result.”

In the men’s relay, the Koreans took the easy way out and led for most of the 5000 m race, winning with a time of 7:10.689. Kazakhstan was second (7:12,409) and the Netherlands (7:12,450) was third.

“I’m happier because we achieved this as a team,” said Wonsik Jeong after the last race of the Olympics short track.

“The journey to the University Games was long. We had a lot of preparation before coming here,” said team captain Juneseo Lee. “Delivering all of this here is amazing.”

Overall, the Republic of Korea won 16 of the 27 medals available in short track speed skating. .
