Lionel Messi at the FIFA World Cup: The biggest disappointments of the Argentinian superstar

Ask any football fan for a name Lionel Messi he would be in the all-time greatest player discussion, even if he wasn’t their best pick.

However, the first Argentine player to score in four FIFA World Cup he has never won the biggest trophy of international competition.

After Argentina’s shock opening 2022 World Cup defeat to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday (November 22) in what is likely to be Messi’s final world tournament, we look back at the star’s three biggest personal disappointments at the World Cup.

• Possibly Messi’s and Ronaldo’s last World Cup – can either of them win it?

1. Argentina 0-1 Germany, 2014 World Cup Final

Messi actually came close to winning the 2014 World Cup in neighboring Brazil.

With their four goals, which were led by all Argentine players that year, the team reached the final.

It was probably Messi’s tournament. In addition to his four goals, he provided an assist and won in 2014 Golden Ball of the World Cup for best player of the tournament.

However, while it shone, the team eventually collapsed.

Opponents Germany – the same team that knocked out Argentina in Messi’s 2006 World Cup debut – sealed a 1-0 victory and lifted the famous trophy.

Being so close and losing is without a doubt one of Messi’s greatest regrets from the World Cup.

2. Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia, 2022 World Cup group stage

Argentina’s defeat on Tuesday probably ranks close to the very top. One of the tournament favourites, who on paper should have no trouble dealing with world No. 51 Saudis, suffered First loss in over three yearsafter losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa América semi-finals.

Messi scored from the penalty spot – his seventh goal of the World Cup from 20 matches – to become the first player from his country to score in four tournaments (2006, 2014, 2018, 2022) – as Argentina threatened to go crazy in the first half.

But three disallowed goals for Albicelest they pulled them back, and a 10-minute attack from Saudi Arabia in the second half yielded an improbable turnaround.

As the final whistle blew in Lusail, Messi looked devastated – perhaps one of the worst moments of his career in an Argentina shirt.

3. Peaceful World Cup 2010 in South Africa

In 2010, when South Africa hosted the first World Cup on the African continent, all eyes were on Messi.

He was already a great player back then, leading the formidable front line of Barcelona and winning Olympic gold in Beijing in 2008 two years earlier.

But Messi had unforgettable tournament because Argentina were knocked out in the quarter-finals by – who else? – Germany with an impressive 4-0 defeat.

Messi in five games network not found once, and of Argentina’s 10 goals, Messi was only involved in one – assisting Carlos Tévez in the round of 16.

It was far from what you would expect from a Barcelona talisman who scored 34 goals in 35 Spanish league matches this season with such confidence.

What’s next for Argentina and Messi in 2022?

Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia in their first group match gives them and Messi an advantage chance to regroup and aim for the last 16 qualifications.

Mexico – which secured the opposition in the second round of 2010 – and led by Robert Lewandowski Poland – stand in the aisle.
