In the age of the club footballoverwhelming popularity, scoring goals in the national shirt is still an experience every footballer longs for.

There are also a few players who have experienced this feeling many times, writing their names in the history books.

Portugal Cristiano Ronaldowith 117 goals in 191 games and counting, he scored most goals in international football in the men’s game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored regularly since his debut for Portugal in 2003 and has 10 hat-tricks to his name – also the most in international football.

Any mention of Cristiano Ronaldo, however, seems incomplete without being compared to another contemporary icon Lionel Messi. As per the norm, the Argentine magician also appears in the top ten of this illustrious list.

Lionel Messi (92 goals) is the third-highest international goalscorer of all time and the second most prolific active goal scorer (now playing) after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Interestingly, an Indian football talisman Sunil Chhetri he is also in the mix, making him fifth and third respectively on the all-time and active scorers list.

Chhetri has played an important role in India’s football fortunes in the last decade, earning legendary status in the country’s sporting history.

However, not only the stars of the 21st century appear in the record books.

Legends like Iran Ali Daeiwho was first player to score 100 goals for the national team, Ferenc Puskas Hungarian boasting an astounding 1-1 goal-to-match ratio and three-time World Cup winner Pele also find a place on the honor list.

Ali Daei with 109 goals is also the top scorer among Asian players Godfrey Chital Zambia ranks first in the list of African footballers.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the top European goalscorer of all time while Lionel Messi and Trinidad and Tobago Stern Jan (70 goals) are ranked respectively in South and North America.

Interestingly, Germany Miroslaw Klose – the player with the most goals (16) at the FIFA World Cup – is not in the top 10 international scorers of all time. Klose’s tally of 71 goals in 137 appearances places him only 16th.
