Bronze medalist of the Olympic Games in Tokyo Lovlina Borgohain demonstrated a dominant performance to enter the quarterfinals Polish Women’s Boxing Championships 2022 in Bhopal on Friday.
Boxer Assam did some light work with Odisha’s Puja Nayak in the 75 kg round of 16 fight. Lovlina Borgohain turned out to be too strong for her opponent as the reigning Asian champion was declared the winner by the verdict of the stoppage judge (RSC) minutes after the first round of the fight.
Meanwhile, 2016 World Championships silver medalist Sonia Lather, representing the Railway Sports Promotion Council, advanced to the quarter-finals of the 57 kg category after a forfeit to Divyani from Karnataka.
Tamil Nadu’s S Kalaivani was the second female boxer to secure the last eight spots, beating Swati Arya of Rajasthan 5-0 in the 48 kg quarter-finals.
Arshi Khanam and Jhalak Tomar of Rajasthan also produced dominant performances and advanced to the quarter-finals with identical 5–0 victories in their matches. While Khanam defeated Ice Prajapati Uttar Pradesh in a 54 kg bout, Tomar (50 kg) defeated Kampi Boro Assam comfortably.
In the case of Haryana, Kalpana won the under 50 kg category and defeated Janhavi Waghmare from Maharashtra 5-0.
Rajni Singh (48 kg) and Rinky Kishore (50 kg), both from Uttar Pradesh, also advanced to the quarter-finals. Rajni defeated Suvidha Bhagat of Punjab 5-0 and Kishore won the RSC against Kavitha Paravada of Andhra Pradesh.
The quarterfinals of the Polish Women’s Boxing Championships will take place on Saturday.
