Photo by MIKAIn exactly 50 days, the brand new 40,000-seat Dong’an Lake Sports Park Stadium will host the opening ceremony of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games (July 28 – August 8).

Located in Longquanyi District, which is the core of East Chengdu New Area and East Chengdu Subcentre, and 12 kilometers from Athletes Village, Dong’an Lake Sports Park Stadium was specially built for Chengdu 2021 FISU Games.

Designed by China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Corp Ltd and completed in April 2021, it is the main site of Dong’an Lake Sports Park, covering a gross area of ??120,000 square meters.

The overall architectural design of the stadium is intended to resemble a spaceship, a circular “UFO”.

The design team used digital methods to create the impressive glazed glass roof (the largest in Asia) and the largest canopy in China made of a circular polyester mesh membrane. The flying saucer-like canopy is crowned with the traditional Golden Sun Bird pattern, showing off international quality, Chinese style and ancient Bash culture.

The 50-meter-tall Class A stadium features a high-end VIP reception area and a 29-meter-high, 300-meter-long, arch-shaped viewing platform. It meets the operational conditions necessary for the opening and closing of mass events, sports events such as athletics and football, as well as exhibitions, expositions, commercial performances, television and sightseeing programs.

After the FISU Games in Chengdu 2021, it will also offer sports facilities for the local population.

From July 28 to August 8, the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games will feature 18 sports and 269 events.
