Sport is an essential part of Lebanese society as most people are aware of its benefits, especially the positive impact it has on youth.
In Lebanon, school sport is considered a way to raise a healthy generation with high self-esteem and a sense of responsibility. It also has a greater value for society, because it “fills” young people’s free time from school and prevents them from engaging in all kinds of negative behavior, such as addictions or crime.
The Sports and Scouting Unit of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is responsible for the development and implementation of school sport in Lebanon. Its Secretary General and responsible for the activities of the organization is Mr. Mazen Koubeissi, who is also the head of the Executive Office of the Arab School Sports Union.
Lebanon’s strategy to further develop school sports is to increase the participation of young athletes at the national level and then select individuals and teams to represent Lebanon at various ISF events.
Every year, the Sports and Scouting Department organizes a mega party for students aged 5-18. About 2,500 schools and 60,000 students participate in the tournament, which hosts 18 different sports from across the country.
The sports covered are football, futsal, mini-football, basketball, volleyball, handball, ping pong, badminton, track and field, cross country, children’s track and field, taekwondo, rhythmic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, sports dance and fitness competitions.
Future plans are to add even more sports in the future and to establish a selection process to identify gifted students with the potential to compete in competitions at an international level.
