Zii Jia recently spoke of his desire to cement himself as world number two, but faces a difficult start to the season after being tied with Japan Naraoka Kodai in the opening round.
A potential second round matchup with a national teammate Ng Tze Yong waiting, with India Laksa Sen and HS Prannoy probably waiting in the third round.
The men’s, women’s and doubles finals will take place on Sunday, January 15.
Olympic and world champion Wiktor Axelsen from Denmark is the best seeded opponent against Zii Jia.
