The Senegalese are our motivation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

What keeps Cheikhou Kouyaté on earth is faith

Kouyaté explains that his strong faith in God – the Senegalese is a devout Muslim – helped him overcome repeated disappointments from his first five major tournaments with the national team.

“For me, it was my faith because I always say the same thing to friends who know me,” he says. “[I’d say]”If we don’t win, we tried, but that’s destiny.” It wasn’t the time – it wasn’t the time for us to hold this cup in our hands.

“In 2019, 2017, 2015… when you see all the players Senegal has had, it’s not the same team that won the AFCON (in 2022). There are other players who were top players, better than us, who didn’t win anything because it wasn’t their destiny.”

Faith plays such a large role in his life that Kouyaté even extends it to the advice he would give to others. While he enjoys giving guidance to young footballers, he strongly believes in destiny.

“Man’s fate is not in his hands. nobody. The fate of man is with God, you never know what may happen tomorrow,” he begins when asked what he would say to aspiring footballers.

“But you have to believe in yourself. You have to tell yourself that you are strong, that you can do it. But you must not forget that you will fall several times. The hardest part is to get up, look forward and say, “OK, I can do it.”
