The Indian men’s ice hockey team will face New Zealand FIH 2023 Men’s Hockey World Championship crossover match at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. The match is scheduled to start at 19:00 Indian time (IST).
India finished second in Group D after beating Spain and Wales and tied with eventual pool winners England. Meanwhile, New Zealand finished third in Group C, winning against Chile and losing to Malaysia and three-time champions the Netherlands.
Under the format of the 2023 FIH Men’s Hockey World Championship, the four group winners (AD) will advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the teams finishing second and third in their groups will play crossover matches for the remaining four quarter-final spots.

The hosts, India, sixth in the world hockey ranking, will have a good chance against New Zealand, which is ranked 12th. The two teams met for the last time in the 2022-23 FIH Pro League in November at the same venue. India won both matches with 4-3 and 7-4 margins.

India will miss the form of midfielder Hardik Singh, who has been ruled out of the rest of the World Hockey Championships with a hamstring injury. Raj Kumar Pal, who scored in the last game between the two sides, was appointed to replace Hardik Singh.
Akashdeep Singh, who scored twice against Wales, will be India’s biggest scoring threat against the Kiwis. Meanwhile, Sam Lane and Sam Hiha have each scored twice for the Black Sticks in this tournament so far.
